Library Thing and Rollyo

Today I looked at creating a Library Thing account and Rollyo account.

Library Thing
I liked Library Thing in being a free tool to catalogue books, I like the display and tool interaction of the web site and it is well designed. Although in my case most of my looks I can see within a glance on the book shelve and therefore I don't think I would be using this application to a great extent. I also liked how there is an image of the item in the catalogue which helps to visualize what the item will look like on the shelf. This could have wide application in libraries because a patron can see what the book looks like before trying to find it on the shelf. It can also help with library staff activities such as tracing items, although the saying goes don’t judge a book by its cover, the cover can give additional information relating to whether the material is relevant or not.

Rollyo
Rollyo is also another useful web application. The by-line that you can create your own search engine using the source you trust. This is useful for law students who can mix academic law sites such as LexisNexis with no academic sites and also things such as blawgs (law blogs). This way you can search both formal and no formal sites with a search engine while keeping out all the rubbish web sites which crop up with your search terms but have no relevance.

Blogging
On the blogging front my spell check on Blogger has disappeared as well as the insert image button. I have tried refreshing the browser, logging in/out, closing and restarting another browser (all in Mozilla) but they are still missing. I am using a word document then pasting this into a new post to avoid spelling mistakes. Hopefully next time I log in they will reappear!

Image Generators

Well long time no post-almost a month, there has just not been the chance.

This week I looked as image generators which I think are really interesting and usefull. I used the image generator located at http://www.jellymuffin.com/generators/textpix2/ which offers may different appliactions including providing icons for Myspace and Blogspots. One of my favorite generators was that which provided for the cover of the Dummies guide, see mine delow:

Bloglines

I have now entered the world of Blogline by setting up my account and setting my preferences.
I find Blogline interesting in that it brings all the little bits and pieces together.

I don't think I will be using the site in the future through because I still find it easier to visit the sites I want by URL.

I also found that Blogline did not cut all advertising for the sites which was disappointing, if there is one annoying thing on the web it would be the advertisements that flash up or flash in the side bar which distracts you from reading the actual web site.

Blogging altogether is very interesting, it gives a voice to people that I wouldn't ordinarily get to read.

It is great when we can meet the needs of library uses and staff with technology. See the new Beta site below, it has many Australian Newspapers archived online. They even have the old 1870 editions of the NT times which are particularly helpful to direct students too as it saves all the trouble with trying to operate the microfilm machine.

The Phone of the Future

Hi,

I have just started to up-lode items onto Flickr, I will try experimenting further next time into the different applications that are available. I'm really glad to be getting into this new programs, although "new" is probably an incorrect term in the concept of technology. I can see so many uses for the new things I am learning, like adding photos of holidays and letting people accessing them without the problems like distance or with the cost of printing photos. I'm certainly pro for all the free applications that do not eat into my meager savings.

Speaking of learning and technology, I have just lernt how to upload images onto my blog. Just a tip for others though, I did not get the image button or spelling application on Internet Explorer, as other bloggers have noted Mozilla is the way to go.

Again on technology see the image below of a new phone, its very interesting, but I don't think I could hold my hand like that for the length of some of my phone calls.

The wonderfull world of Flickr

Good afternoon,

Looking out the window to a storm rolling in over the ocean to the library which is really quite a sight, there is heavy rain and lightning, there has also been an annoucment to save work- just the right time to look at 23things instead of data.

Welcome to my new Blog,

I wish to use this blog as a learning tool to work my way through 23 things run through the university library.

I have completed Thing 1 by reading through the program and also attended the launch today.
